This tutorial assumes you have Arma II: Combined Operations installed from steam and have launched both Arma II and Arma II:Operation Arrowhead to install the directx and battleeye dependancies.

Download the Six-Updater from https://dev-heaven.net/projects/six-arma-updater/files
  1. Run the Six-Updater exe file to install to the updater and launcher.
  2. Run the Six Launcher from the desktop shortcut and you should see a DayZ logo at the top with a server list to the right. Click the Update button on the left.
  3. When update is complete, close the launcher.
  4. Launch Steam and go to your games library, in the bottom left below your games list you find a button called "+ Add a Game..." Click here
5. Click browse and navigate to the directory where you installed six-updater. Default 64bit Windows 7 is C:\Program Files (x86)\SIX Projects\Six Updater
6. Select Six Launcher.exe and then click add selected program.
7. A Shortcut for Six Launcher will now appear in your Games Library listings.
8. Right click on Six Launcher and select Properties. change the first field Six Launcher to Day Z or desired game display name. You may also change the icon to another file. Verify the the target and start in fields look similar if not exact to the following:
9. Launch Day Z from your Game Library and the Six Launcher menu should appear with a verify button on the left and server listings on the right. Click the "Verify" button so that Six Launcher will verify your local game content. The verify button should automatically change to "Launch" select a server from the right or click launch and use the in game server browser. Once in game you should be able to use "shift + tab" to access the steam overlay features as well as track your time spent playing the game.

This definitely does not let you shift-tab while in DayZ.

Thanks for making this video. It helped me realize that my issue lies somewhere else. The problem that I am encountering is for whatever reason, Six Launcher, Six Updater, and even DayZ Commander all prompt User Account Control when they are launched. The only time they don't do this is if I run Steam as an administrator. Then the shortcuts through steam to Six Launcher work fine, as does the subsequent In-game steam overlay. Any ideas? I can't find any similar problems mentioned anywhere.

I'm glad you all had this conversation. This is what I was missing too.

Right click DayZ in Steam once you've added it, look at "Target:" Then after the quotation marks in that box, put -admin and it should let you launch the game, prompting UAC.

Jack thanks for the updated information.

I have not heard of this issue with DayZ , but I have heard of it with mods for fallout 3. Common recommendations include disable UAC or installing steam to a directory other than program files.

I got everything working except the Steam Overlay, now whenever I click ARMA 2 Operation Overhead, the steam overlay works but whenever I click on the Six Uploader/DayZ it does not, Any suggestions?

25Uniform,
Try turning down your UAC settings for windows 7 / vista. I hope to be posting another video this weekend with an alternative method that well help people with this issue.
thanks,

Paul

Still doesnt seem to work, hmm should I turn my UAC all the way down to the lowest?

After looking into the problem further I was unable to come up with a solution that worked in both windows 7 and vista without turning UAC off or setting Steam to always run as administrator. DayZ wiki recommends settings steam to run as administrator. http://www.dayzwiki.com/wiki/How_to_install_DayZ

Aw, this was a really quality post. In theory I'd like to write like this too - taking time and real effort to make a good article... but what can I say... I procrastinate alot and never seem to get something done.
